Chandigarh/Fazilka, May 4 (NewsUp9):
In a bold declaration, Punjab Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal emphasized that Punjab water rights protection is not up for compromise. He made it clear that Punjab’s fields cannot be left parched just to supply water to other states.
The minister highlighted that the Bhagwant Mann–led AAP government is fully committed to safeguarding the state’s water. According to him, any attempt to unfairly divert Punjab’s water will be strongly opposed.
Furthermore, Goyal responded to questions about the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). He explained that Punjab will participate in BBMB meetings only if they are convened according to proper rules. However, the state will boycott any meeting that violates established protocols or is driven by pressure from the Centre.
To strengthen its position, the government has scheduled a special Punjab Vidhan Sabha session on May 5. During this session, a clear strategy will be finalized to defend the state’s water interests.
Meanwhile, Fazilka farmers celebrated the approval of the ₹647.43 crore Firozepur Feeder canal project. They met Minister Goyal, offered him sweets, and expressed deep gratitude. This project is a major step in ensuring Punjab water rights protection for the future.
Importantly, Goyal explained that the canal’s relining and capacity enhancement will benefit Fazilka, Firozepur, Sri Muktsar Sahib, and Faridkot districts. Moreover, it will prevent polluted ‘black water’ from Pakistan’s Kasur drain from entering border villages.
Goyal reaffirmed that the AAP government will take every step to ensure Punjab’s farmers receive their fair share of water. In addition, he said the government will not allow other states to exceed their allocated quotas.
Significantly, Goyal was accompanied by Fazilka MLA Narinder Pal Singh Sawna, Balluana MLA Amandeep Singh Goldy Musafir, Jalalabad MLA Jagdeep Kamboj Goldy, and former MLA Arun Narang during the farmer meeting.
In conclusion, the message from the Punjab government is clear: Punjab water rights protection is a top priority. With decisive leadership, strategic action, and the support of its farmers, Punjab aims to protect every drop of its water from unfair diversion.
