A tragic road accident on Thursday morning in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, claimed the lives of five individuals, including four police personnel and an undertrial prisoner. The police van, en route from Firozabad to Muzaffarnagar, rammed into a stationary container truck near Chikawati village along the Delhi-Kanpur highway.
The crash, which occurred around 8:15 AM, left the police vehicle completely mangled. Initial investigations suggest the accident was caused by the driver falling asleep at the wheel. A sixth occupant, a police constable, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.
The deceased were identified as:
Sub-Inspector Ramsanjeevan
Head Constable Balveer Singh
Head Constable Raghubeer Singh
Driver Head Constable Chandrabhan Singh
Undertrial accused Gulshanwar, son of Ishrat
Gulshanwar was being transported to appear before a special gangster court in Muzaffarnagar. The vehicle, bearing registration number UP-83-G-0687, had departed earlier in the morning and was headed to court when it collided with the immobile container.
According to local eyewitnesses, the van was nearing Chikawati village after passing Khereshwar crossing when it slammed into the rear of the container parked along the roadside. The impact was severe, prompting traffic disruption as following vehicles stopped to assist.
Emergency teams from Lodha and Gabhana police stations arrived quickly at the scene. The injured were extricated from the crushed van and rushed to a nearby hospital. However, three officers and the accused died on the spot or shortly after.
Circle Officer Sanjeev Kumar Tomar confirmed the fatality count and stated that further investigation is ongoing to determine whether any safety lapses contributed to the incident. “This is a deeply unfortunate event. Five lives have been lost—one accused and four of our own,” he said.
This accident has raised fresh concerns over long-distance prisoner transport and driver fatigue, particularly in early morning hours. Authorities are reviewing protocol to prevent similar incidents in the future.
