Canada Election Results 2025 Live Updates: Mark Carney says ‘Trump is trying to divide us so he can take over’
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has retained power in the 2025 federal elections but has fallen short of forming a majority government.
Carney asserts Canadian sovereignty in face of U.S. pressure
Speaking after the results, Prime Minister Carney warned Canadians about external threats, particularly from the United States. “President Trump is trying to divide us so that America can take control of our country,” Carney said while addressing supporters. He called on Canadians to stay united, asserting that when he sits down to negotiate with U.S. President Donald Trump, the talks will be “between two sovereign states.”
Liberal Party falls short of majority; Conservatives concede defeat
Carney’s Liberals secured a minority government following Monday’s elections. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre accepted defeat but pledged that his party would keep the minority government accountable and continue to raise questions on national issues.
As of late Monday night, Liberals were leading or had won in 164 ridings, while the Conservatives followed closely with 147, though counting was still underway.
Carney promises unity and resilience in victory speech
In his victory speech, Mark Carney reaffirmed his commitment to unity, growth, and resilience—values he described as central to Canadian identity. He expressed gratitude to his family, parents, and siblings for their lifelong support and credited them with teaching him “true Canadian values.”
Trump’s comments spark strong responses
Amid the election, Donald Trump stirred controversy by suggesting Canada would be better off as America’s 51st state. In response, both Carney and Poilievre rejected the idea, firmly affirming Canada’s independence and sovereignty.
NDP’s Jagmeet Singh to step down
Following the poor performance of the New Democratic Party (NDP) in the federal election, party leader Jagmeet Singh announced he would resign once an interim leader is appointed. His statement came after the NDP failed to make significant gains, continuing its declining trend in federal politics.
