Meteorological Department Announces Good News, but Also Mentions Some Worrying Factors

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that during this year’s monsoon season, the country will experience more than usual rainfall, meaning heavy showers. According to M. Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the long-term weather forecast suggests that the monsoon rainfall could be up to 105% of the average this year.

The IMD has also ruled out the possibility of El Niño conditions developing this year. IMD Chief Mrityunjay Mahapatra said in a press conference in New Delhi, “During the four-month monsoon season (from June to September), there is a likelihood of rainfall being higher than usual across India, with the total accumulated rainfall expected to be 105% of the long-term average or around 87 centimeters.”

No Impact of El Niño
This year, there is no expected development of El Niño conditions, which generally lead to reduced rainfall in parts of India. The monsoon typically arrives in Kerala around June 1 and then spreads across the country. By mid-September, the monsoon starts retreating.

Worrying Factors
However, the meteorological department also mentioned some concerning aspects, stating that during the period from April to June, many states could experience intense heat waves. This could put significant pressure on the power grid, and drought conditions could develop in some regions. The department also warned of potential drinking water shortages in certain areas.

Good News for Agriculture and the Economy
India is an agriculture-driven country, and monsoon rainfall is crucial for agriculture, as most irrigation depends on the monsoon rains. Agriculture contributes 18% to India’s GDP, and the forecasted heavy rainfall could significantly benefit the agricultural sector and the economy.

The most positive news is that the heavy rains expected during the monsoon could provide much-needed support to the agricultural sector, which is vital for the country.
