A case came before the Supreme Court today that compelled the bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi to take a stern stand. Petitioner P. Mohanty presented an unusual demand before the court, requesting that revolutionary Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose be declared the ‘Son of the Nation‘ and that the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army) be given official credit for India’s independence. However, as soon as this Public Interest Litigation (PIL) came up for hearing, the court dismissed it immediately and reprimanded the petitioner.
The Chief Justice explicitly stated that this petition was filed solely with the intention of gaining publicity and is nothing more than a waste of the court’s precious time. The court noted that Mohanty had previously filed several such arbitrary petitions, all of which had been dismissed. When the petitioner argued that this case was different from previous ones, the bench rebuked him, stating that he was incapable of reform and that the court would no longer tolerate such behavior. The shock in the courtroom escalated when the petitioner revealed that the draft of his petition was prepared by a “Chief Minister Sir,” to which the court expressed strong objection.
In view of this serious situation, the Supreme Court issued strict instructions to its registry not to accept any future PILs from P. Mohanty. The court warned that if there is no immediate improvement in his conduct, he would be barred from entering the Supreme Court premises. This incident clarifies that the judiciary has become very firm against those attempting to capture media attention through frivolous issues, and the misuse of judicial time will no longer be tolerated.
