Punjab is experiencing a steady rise in temperature as a heatwave grips multiple districts. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the state has recorded an average increase of 1.6°C in maximum temperature. Though temperatures remain within seasonal norms, the intensity of the heat is noticeably increasing.

Heat to continue for three more days

Weather experts predict that the elevated temperatures will persist for the next three days. The highest temperature was recorded at the Bathinda Air Force Station, which touched 41.7°C—2.4°C above normal. Other cities such as Chandigarh, Ludhiana, and Patiala also reported high temperatures of 39.9°C, 40.6°C, and 40.4°C respectively.

Amritsar and Gurdaspur saw the mercury soar above 38°C, creating heatwave-like conditions in several regions. Experts have advised the public to take precautions during peak afternoon hours and stay hydrated.

Rain expected on May 17

Relief from the scorching heat is expected to begin on May 17, when a change in weather patterns could bring light rain and gusty winds. IMD has issued a forecast for isolated rain in about 11 districts, including Nawanshahr, Mohali, Patiala, Sangrur, Mansa, Bathinda, Fazilka, and Muktsar.

The rain is likely to be scattered, covering less than 25% of the area in the affected districts. However, even a brief spell of rain could bring much-needed respite from the prevailing heat.

City-wise weather forecast

  • Amritsar: Partly cloudy skies expected. Temperatures will range from 23°C to 38°C.

  • Jalandhar: Light cloud cover likely. Temperatures between 22°C and 36°C.

  • Ludhiana: Partly cloudy with chances of rain. Temperatures from 24°C to 38°C.

  • Patiala: Light showers expected with clouds. Temperature between 24°C and 39°C.

  • Mohali: Cloudy skies and light rain possible. Temperature between 25°C and 37°C.

This weather shift could provide some relief for farmers and residents who’ve been dealing with rising temperatures and dry conditions for the past week.
