Punjab is experiencing temperatures about 2.5 degrees Celsius higher than normal, with six cities recording temperatures above 40°C. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Chandigarh center reports that although the average maximum temperature yesterday was 0.5°C lower than the previous day, it remains significantly above the usual levels. Bathinda recorded the highest temperature in Punjab at 43.9°C.

The IMD has issued weather warnings for Punjab for the next four days:
April 29: Yellow heatwave alert in Fazilka, Muktsar, Firozpur, Faridkot, Bathinda, and Mansa due to rising temperatures.
April 30: Continued likelihood of heatwave conditions in the same cities.
May 1: Orange alert for rain and strong winds in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, and Mohali. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning are expected in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Nawanshahr, Moga, Sangrur, Patiala, and Fatehgarh Sahib.
May 2: Continued chances of rain, thunderstorms, and lightning in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Mohali, Patiala, Bathinda, and Mansa.
Amritsar: Clear skies, temperature between 20°C and 40°C.
Jalandhar: Clear skies, temperature between 20°C and 38°C.
Ludhiana: Clear skies, temperature between 20°C and 41°C.
Patiala: Clear skies, temperature between 22°C and 41°C.
Mohali: Clear skies, temperature between 23°C and 39°C.
Residents are advised to take precautions during the heatwave, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and protecting vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. Farmers are urged to safeguard crops and maintain irrigation to mitigate heat stress.
This heatwave is part of a broader pattern of rising temperatures in northern India, with relief expected from rain and thunderstorms starting May 1.
