Critics Compare Coalition Leader’s Remarks to Donald Trump’s Media Attacks

Peter Dutton, the leader of Australia’s opposition Coalition, has come under fire after labeling the ABC and Guardian Australia as “hate media” in a speech at a rally in Melbourne on Sunday. Critics have likened his rhetoric to that of former U.S. President Donald Trump, with some questioning the political strategy behind the remarks as the final week of the election campaign approaches.

In his address, Dutton told his supporters, “Forget about what you have been told by the ABC, in the Guardian and the other hate media,” while asserting that the Coalition still had a chance to win despite polling data showing declining support. He emphasized his belief that a strong leadership would be the key to Australia’s future, suggesting that the media’s portrayal of his campaign was misleading.

Critics Accuse Dutton of Desperation

Matthew Ricketson, a professor of communication at Deakin University, noted that Dutton’s attack on the media was reminiscent of Donald Trump’s famous media criticism. “It sounds like Donald Trump,” Ricketson said, adding that Dutton’s language could be a sign of desperation as he heads into the final stretch of the election. “It’s odd that, after trying to distance himself from Trump, he’s chosen to go down this route again.”

Andrew Dodd, a former ABC journalist, also criticized Dutton, suggesting the leader should be cautious when criticizing the national broadcaster. “The ABC is deeply respected across the country, particularly with rural and regional voters,” Dodd said. He warned that such remarks could harm Dutton’s standing with these key voter groups.

Media Figures Defend Their Reporting

Quentin Dempster, a former ABC broadcaster, described Dutton’s comments as “an egregious smear” and expressed concerns that a Dutton-led government could threaten the independence of the ABC. “Rather than de-escalation, it’s an incitement to hatred of ABC and Guardian staff who are striving to report fairly,” Dempster said.

Labor’s communications minister, Michelle Rowland, also condemned Dutton’s comments, warning that politicians attacking free and independent media is a dangerous trend. “Around the world, free and independent media is under attack from politicians afraid of scrutiny,” Rowland stated.

Guardian Australia’s editor, Lenore Taylor, defended the outlet’s election coverage, emphasizing that it has worked to inform voters and hold all parties accountable.

The Future of ABC Funding Under Dutton

The Coalition has not ruled out cutting ABC funding if Dutton is elected. In past elections, former Liberal leaders have made similar promises only to backtrack once in office. The ABC has faced significant funding cuts in recent years, and Dutton’s comments have raised concerns about the broadcaster’s future under a potential Coalition government.

As the election draws near, the rhetoric surrounding the media and the role of free press in a democracy continues to shape the political landscape.
