In a tragic incident on Monday, five passengers lost their lives after falling from an overcrowded local train in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The accident occurred between Mumbra and Diva railway stations, raising fresh concerns over the chronic overcrowding in the city’s suburban rail network.
According to railway officials, the victims fell off the moving train due to extreme crowd pressure. The local train was reportedly carrying passengers far beyond its capacity. Eyewitnesses claim that many passengers were hanging at the doorways, a common but dangerous practice in Mumbai’s peak-hour commuting.
The accident took place when the Pushpak Express and a Kasara-bound local train were passing each other on parallel tracks. The sudden turbulence during the crossing is believed to have jolted the standing passengers, causing some of them to fall onto the tracks.
Emergency response teams and railway officials rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the alert. All injured individuals were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. While five people were declared dead, several others are reported to have sustained injuries.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased. A senior railway officer stated that a thorough investigation has been initiated and CCTV footage from nearby stations is being reviewed to determine the exact sequence of events.
Mumbai’s local train system, known as the city’s lifeline, transports over 7.5 million commuters daily. However, frequent overcrowding, especially during rush hours, has often led to fatal accidents. Passenger safety advocates have long demanded urgent reforms, including increased frequency of services and better crowd management measures.
This tragic incident once again underscores the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades and stricter enforcement of safety protocols across India’s suburban railway networks.
