Trump’s Ultimatum to Iran: No Extension of Ceasefire Without a Deal; Firm Stance on Strait of Hormuz

Washington: April 18, 2026

US President Donald Trump has adopted a “Strict Stand” amidst the escalating tensions with Iran. He has made it clear that if the ongoing negotiations fail to reach a consensus, the United States will not only refuse to extend the existing ceasefire but may also move to take “forceful control” of Iran’s nuclear material. Trump asserted that if a peaceful transfer is not negotiated, the U.S. will secure it with “great force,” though he maintained hope that both nations are nearing a deal. According to a report by CNN, a new round of talks could occur on Monday, though there has been no official confirmation from the U.S. administration.

Deadlock at the Strait of Hormuz

Meanwhile, the standoff over the Strait of Hormuz—the world’s most critical oil transit route—persists. President Trump issued a stern warning that no toll will be permitted on vessels passing through the waterway, and Iran will be strictly prohibited from imposing such charges.

In a sharp rebuttal, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament warned of retaliatory measures, stating that if the United States does not lift its naval blockade, the route will be completely shut down once again. The severity of the deadlock was evident on Friday, as only a handful of ships managed to successfully navigate the passage.

Geopolitical Manoeuvres and Global Impact

On the international stage, Trump mentioned on Truth Social that Chinese President Xi Jinping is reportedly pleased with the news of the Strait potentially staying open. Trump also announced an upcoming historic meeting with Xi in Beijing next month.

Furthermore, in a major strategic move to stabilize soaring oil prices, the United States has temporarily eased sanctions on Russian oil. This policy shift is being viewed as a calculated tactic to manage the global energy crisis while the confrontation with Iran continues to unfold.
