Many people consider eye discharge or mucus a natural occurrence, especially after waking up. However, in certain cases, this discharge could indicate an underlying eye condition or infection that should not be ignored.
Discharge from the eyes, commonly seen after a night’s sleep, is often mistaken for dust or sand and generally considered harmless. But if this discharge becomes excessive or occurs frequently, it may be a sign of an infection or other eye-related issue.
Health experts warn that if the quantity or color of the eye mucus changes noticeably, it’s time to take it seriously. Timely consultation with an eye specialist is crucial to diagnose and treat potential problems early.
Normally, eye discharge is light cream or off-white in color. This is typical and usually not a cause for concern. However, a change in color—especially to yellow or green—could point to something more serious.
The nature, color, and quantity of discharge from the eyes can help in identifying the type of problem:
Yellow or Green Discharge: If the discharge is yellowish or green, it could indicate a viral or bacterial infection, most commonly conjunctivitis (pink eye). This condition often causes redness in the eyes and can be contagious.
Increased Quantity: An unusually large amount of discharge could signal an active infection or an inflammatory condition requiring medical attention.
Eye discharge should not be overlooked, especially if:
It occurs frequently throughout the day.
The color turns yellow or green.
It is accompanied by redness, irritation, or swelling.
The eyes feel sticky, especially in the morning.
