Gurdaspur Hottest in State Despite Dip

The weather in Punjab has shifted unexpectedly, with a significant drop in temperature across the state. On May 2, 2025, the average maximum temperature dropped by 5.5°C, making it 8.3°C lower than the seasonal normal. As a result, temperatures in all districts fell below 34°C — a stark contrast from the nearly 40°C highs recorded earlier.

Despite the overall cooling, Gurdaspur remained the warmest location in Punjab, recording a maximum temperature of 33.5°C. Here’s how major districts fared:

  • Amritsar: 30.8°C (−7.2°C below normal)

  • Ludhiana: 30.0°C (−8.1°C)

  • Patiala: 31.7°C (−6.4°C)

  • Bathinda: 30.6°C (−8.2°C)

  • Ferozepur: 30.2°C (−9.6°C)

  • Mohali: 30.5°C (−6.6°C)

Some areas, such as Pathankot and Amritsar, experienced light rainfall, while most other districts saw only cloudy skies, which contributed to keeping the temperatures lower.

Rain Forecast and Weather Alerts

According to the Meteorological Department, several parts of Punjab are expected to witness light to moderate rainfall over the next five days. Rain is likely in scattered areas until May 4.

  • May 5: Heavy rain is expected in districts like Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, and Rupnagar. A ‘Orange Alert’ has been issued for this day.

  • May 6: Rainfall is expected to be more localized, with lighter showers in limited areas.

  • May 7: Strong winds are expected to persist across the region, leading to the issuance of a ‘Yellow Alert’ for multiple areas.

Western Disturbance Behind Temperature Drop

The drop in temperature is attributed to a Western Disturbance, which has caused cyclonic circulation near the Punjab-Haryana border. This system has brought strong winds, dust storms, and light rainfall to the region, resulting in a noticeable cooling effect.

Meteorologists predict that temperatures will dip further in the next 24 hours. However, following a few cooler days, temperatures are likely to rise again by 2–4°C.
