Diplomatic Tension Escalates: Indian Tankers Attacked in Strait of Hormuz; New Delhi Summons Iranian Envoy

New Delhi: April 19, 2026

The maritime security crisis in the Middle East took a sharp turn on Saturday, April 18, 2026, as two Indian-flagged oil tankers—Jag Arnav and Sanmar Herald—were fired upon by the Iranian Navy north of Oman. The vessels, carrying nearly two million barrels of Iraqi crude oil, were attempting to navigate the Strait of Hormuz during a period of high-stakes military friction.

The Incident: Warning Shots and Forced U-Turns

The confrontation occurred shortly after the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy reimposed “strict military control” over the strategic waterway.

  • Direct Attack: IRGC gunboats reportedly fired warning shots at the tankers near Qeshm and Larak islands.

  • The Damage: A bullet reportedly shattered a window on one of the vessels. Fortunately, no injuries to the Indian crew members were reported.

  • The “INDIASHIP” Signal: In a desperate bid for safety, the Sanmar Herald reportedly changed its destination and display name on maritime tracking platforms to “INDIASHIPINDIACREW” to signal its neutral status to Iranian forces.

  • Retreat: Following the gunfire and VHF broadcasts declaring the Strait “completely closed again,” both tankers and at least six other India-bound vessels were forced to reverse course.

Diplomatic Fallout: India Lodges Strong Protest

In response to the firing on civilian merchant ships, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) took decisive action on Saturday evening:

  1. Envoy Summoned: The MEA summoned Iranian Ambassador Dr. Mohammad Fathali to South Block for an urgent meeting with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

  2. Formal Protest: India lodged a “strong protest,” expressing deep concern over the safety of Indian seafarers. The MEA emphasized that the safety of merchant shipping is a top priority.

  3. Restoration of Passage: Foreign Secretary Misri urged Tehran to immediately resume the facilitation of India-bound ships, recalling that Iran had previously identified India as a “friendly nation” whose ships would be granted safe passage.

Iran’s Stance: “5,000 Years of Friendship” vs. Military Reality

Despite the military action, Iranian diplomatic representatives in India attempted to downplay the hostility. Dr. Abdul Majid Hakim Elahi, a representative of the Iranian Supreme Leader in India, spoke of the 5,000-year-old bond between the two nations and expressed hope for a resolution through dialogue.

However, the IRGC Navy has maintained a much harder line:

  • The Blockade Trigger: Iran claims the U.S. government failed to fulfill commitments made during recent negotiations in Islamabad.

  • Retaliation: Tehran warned that as long as the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports (implemented on April 13) remains in place, no vessel of any nationality will be allowed safe passage without IRGC clearance.
