Donald Trump Imposes 10% Additional Tariff on Canada Over Advertisement Row, Cancels Trade Talks

Washington, Oct 26, 2025:
In a dramatic escalation of tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed an additional 10% tariff on Canada, raising the total tariff rate to 45%, in response to a controversial Canadian advertisement. The move has strained U.S.-Canada relations and led to the suspension of ongoing trade discussions.

According to reports, the advertisement — aired in Ontario — used a clip of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan to criticize Trump’s trade policies and tariffs, suggesting that they could trigger a trade war and economic crisis. Although the Canadian government swiftly removed the ad following public backlash, President Trump reportedly viewed it as an “act of hostility” and decided to respond with fresh tariffs.

“They played dirty, and everyone knows I can play dirty too,” President Trump told reporters before leaving for the ASEAN Summit, where he refused to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Trump said the advertisement campaign aimed to “mislead people” and “influence U.S. Supreme Court and other judicial decisions through propaganda.”

The White House confirmed that trade negotiations with Canada have been halted indefinitely, further worsening the diplomatic rift between the two North American neighbors.

Trump made the announcement through a post on his official social media account, stating:

“In light of Canada’s conspiracies and hostile actions, I am increasing the tariffs by 10%. We will not tolerate such deceitful behavior.”

The unexpected tariff hike has sparked concern among economic analysts, who warn that it could have serious repercussions for Canada’s economy, particularly its manufacturing and export sectors.
