Video: Karnataka Ganesh Visarjan Tragedy – Truck Rams into Procession, 8 Dead, Over 20 Injured
Hassan, Karnataka – A festive Ganesh Chaturthi procession turned into a scene of devastation on Friday night after a speeding truck ploughed into a Ganesh visarjan rally in Mosale Hosahalli village of Hassan district. At least eight people were killed, most of them young men, while more than 20 others suffered serious injuries.
According to police sources, the accident occurred around 8:45 pm during the final day of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Witnesses said the truck, reportedly coming from Arkalgudu, lost control and rammed into the crowd of devotees before mowing them down. Several of the injured were rushed to a private hospital in Hassan for emergency treatment, with at least eight reported to be in critical condition.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and announced an ex gratia compensation of ₹5 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He also confirmed that the state government will bear the medical expenses of all those injured. In a post on social media platform X, Siddaramaiah said he was “pained by the loss of lives and the serious injuries caused” and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy also expressed grief, saying: “I am deeply saddened to learn about the tragic accident during the Ganapati immersion procession at Mosale Hosahalli in Hassan taluk.”
Eyewitnesses reported that after the accident, the truck driver, identified as Bhuvasnesh, allegedly attempted to flee the scene. However, the angry crowd caught hold of him, assaulted him, and later handed him over to the police. Sources revealed that the truck belonged to a private logistics company.
The devastating incident has left the village in shock, with celebrations abruptly giving way to mourning. Authorities are continuing investigations into the cause of the crash.
