In a major political surprise, Bruce Fanjoy—a stay-at-home dad and first-time Liberal Party of Canada candidate—defeated Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre in Carleton. Fanjoy won by over 4,300 votes, ending Poilievre’s two-decade tenure as MP and shaking the foundation of his prime ministerial ambitions.
Fanjoy’s campaign focused on positive messaging and strong grassroots outreach. “We ran a positive campaign, unlike Pierre’s divisive approach,” Fanjoy said in an interview with Politico Magazine. His effort to personally connect with voters paid off. “I wore through two pairs of sneakers and a pair of boots,” he added, describing his extensive door-knocking strategy.

A turning point came when Donald Trump increased his threats toward Canada. Fanjoy noted, “There was a sea change in what I was hearing at the doors.” With rising concerns about Canada–U.S. relations, voters looked for leaders they believed would defend Canadian interests—leading many to shift away from Poilievre.
Fanjoy cited Poilievre’s lack of visibility in the riding as a major factor. “Pierre barely showed up. People don’t like to be taken for granted,” he said. Fanjoy and his team, however, stayed active across the riding, offering a fresh, engaging alternative.

Despite being new to politics, Fanjoy’s background in competitive sports and the private sector helped shape his strategy. “I know how to compete and stay grounded in values,” he said. His story resonated with many first-time voters.
“This was a clear message,” Fanjoy declared. “Canadians want responsible, steady leadership. Not the divisive politics we see down south.” The results are seen as a rejection of Poilievre’s polarizing style and a call for unity and pragmatic governance.
With the Liberal Party now forming a minority government, Fanjoy emphasized responsible governance. “We’ll lead with principle. Our government is filled with people who love their communities and care deeply for Canada.”
