ensions between India and Pakistan rose sharply after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22. In response, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held a closed-door meeting. During the session, members asked Pakistan several tough questions.

According to The Tribune, UNSC members directly asked if the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba had played a role in the attack. All 15 members of the Council—including five permanent and ten non-permanent—attended the meeting.

The Council rejected Pakistan’s claim that India carried out the attack. Members insisted that India and Pakistan should resolve such issues through bilateral talks.

Pakistan requested the meeting, and Greece, the current UNSC president, scheduled it for Monday. The discussion did not take place in the main UNSC chamber but in an adjoining consultation room. It lasted about 90 minutes.

The UNSC did not release an official statement afterward. However, Pakistan said it achieved most of its goals during the session. As a non-permanent member, Pakistan had asked for this meeting to discuss rising tensions between two nuclear-armed neighbors.

Despite Pakistan’s claim of success, the Council’s questions about Lashkar-e-Taiba increased international pressure on Islamabad.
