The U.S. Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris has officially been withdrawn. Following President Donald Trump’s directive, the White House announced that Harris’s Secret Service cover will end on September 1, 2025.
According to a White House official quoted by Reuters on Friday, former President Joe Biden had extended Harris’s protection for one year before leaving office in January 2025. Under that extension, Harris was supposed to remain under Secret Service security until January 2026. However, the White House has now confirmed that her protection will cease starting September 1.
President Trump issued an official memorandum to the Secretary of Homeland Security ordering the immediate termination of additional Secret Service privileges for Harris. The memo stated that Harris “should receive only the minimum security required by law, and no additional facilities or resources.”
This means that from September 1, Kamala Harris will no longer enjoy the extended protective cover usually provided to high-profile figures, and will instead only be entitled to the standard legal provisions.
The U.S. Secret Service is a federal agency tasked with protecting the President, Vice President, their families, and other key national leaders. While Presidents and their families are typically granted lifetime protection, former Vice Presidents receive Secret Service protection only for six months after leaving office.
In certain cases, when the threat perception is deemed high, the President can extend that duration. Biden used this authority to extend Harris’s protection for one year, but the Trump administration has now ended it six months earlier than planned.
The move is being seen as part of Trump’s broader effort to cut back on privileges enjoyed by his political opponents. Analysts suggest that further reductions in benefits for former Vice President Harris could follow.
At present, Harris has not issued any public response to the White House order. Political observers expect her to comment on Trump’s decision in the coming days.
