Deoghar bus accident kills 4 Kanwariyas in a tragic road mishap that occurred in the Jamuniya area under Mohanpur police station in Jharkhand’s Deoghar district. The incident involved a head-on collision between a bus carrying Kanwariyas and a truck laden with LPG cylinders, causing a scene of chaos and panic.
According to initial reports, the deceased include one woman, three men, and the bus driver. Around a dozen others were seriously injured and have been admitted to Sadar Hospital in Deoghar. Authorities fear the death toll may rise.
The victims were part of a group of Kanwariyas, Hindu devotees participating in the annual Sawan Yatra, traveling from Baba Dham (Deoghar) to Basukinath Dham to offer holy water to Lord Shiva. Witnesses say that the bus driver may have been intoxicated or had fallen asleep, leading the vehicle to first hit a stack of bricks and then crash into an oncoming truck.
Fortunately, despite the truck carrying LPG cylinders, there was no explosion, preventing a potentially larger catastrophe.
Local authorities launched immediate rescue and relief operations. Fifteen ambulances were dispatched to the scene to transport the injured and deceased. Police and emergency personnel are currently securing the area and assisting families of victims.
The Deoghar-Basukinath route holds immense religious importance. Every year during the Sawan month, lakhs of Kanwariyas walk 108 km barefoot from Sultanganj (Bihar), where the Ganga flows northward, to offer water at Baba Baidyanath Dham, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
This seasonal pilgrimage witnesses an overwhelming influx of devotees, often putting immense pressure on local infrastructure and transportation systems.
Police officials have urged transport operators to ensure proper fitness of vehicles and sobriety of drivers, especially during religious gatherings. The administration has promised a full investigation into the accident and stated that compensation will be provided to families of the deceased.
