A heartbreaking and shocking incident has come to light from Rohtak, Haryana, where 16-year-old national-level basketball player Hardik died in a tragic accident during practice. The incident occurred early Tuesday morning at the Lakhan Majra sports ground, where Hardik was training alone.
According to sources, Hardik attempted to grab the basketball pole while practicing. At that moment, the heavy and unstable iron pole twisted and collapsed, falling directly on his chest and head.
The attached hoop and backboard also crashed down, crushing Hardik underneath and causing severe injuries.
Nearby CCTV cameras captured the entire incident. The footage shows Hardik leaping toward the hoop to grab it when the pole suddenly breaks and falls on him.
Other players nearby rushed to help and took him to PGIMS Rohtak, but due to severe head injuries, doctors could not save him.
Though only 16, Hardik had already made a name for himself at the national level. He had won several medals in youth and sub-junior championships:
47th Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship, Kangra – Silver Medal
49th Sub-Junior Nationals, Hyderabad – Bronze Medal
39th Youth Nationals, Puducherry – Bronze Medal
His untimely death has left his family, village, coaches, and the entire sports community in deep shock.
This tragic incident has raised serious questions about the safety standards of sports infrastructure. The condition and stability of equipment—especially heavy iron poles—are now under scrutiny.
Haryana Police and the local administration have launched an investigation to determine whether negligence or poor maintenance led to the fatal accident.
Meanwhile, heartfelt tributes and condolences are pouring in on social media from athletes, coaches, and sports lovers across the country.
