Goa Nightclub Fire Tragedy: 14 Staff Among 25 Dead; Shocking Video Emerges

December 7, 2025 | 9:01 AM IST

A devastating fire at a popular nightclub in Goa has claimed at least 25 lives, with authorities confirming that 14 of the victims were employees of the establishment. The incident occurred shortly after midnight at the “Burch by Romeo Lane” nightclub in Arpora, around 25 kilometers from the state capital Panaji. Disturbing videos of the blaze have since surfaced on social media, showing thick smoke engulfing the building and frantic rescue efforts underway.

According to Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, most of those who lost their lives were working in the nightclub’s kitchen area at the time of the fire. Among the deceased are three women and three to four tourists. Initial findings indicate that three victims died due to severe burn injuries, while the remaining casualties succumbed to suffocation caused by inhaling smoke.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the tragedy and extended his condolences to the families of the victims. In a message posted on social media platform X, he said the fire incident in Arpora was “extremely heartbreaking” and added that his thoughts were with those who had lost their loved ones. He also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.

The Prime Minister stated that he had spoken directly with Chief Minister Sawant to assess the situation and assured that the state government was providing all possible assistance to those affected. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) later announced financial relief under the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF): ₹2 lakh ex-gratia compensation for the next of kin of each deceased victim and ₹50,000 for those injured.

Goa Police Director General Alok Kumar confirmed that the fire was triggered by a gas cylinder explosion inside the nightclub. Emergency services, including fire brigade teams and police units, rushed to the scene immediately and continued rescue and recovery operations throughout the night. All 25 bodies have been recovered from the building and transported to Goa Medical College in Bambolim for post-mortem examinations, local BJP विधायक Michael Lobo said.

Chief Minister Sawant has assured strict action against the nightclub management as well as government officials found guilty of ignoring fire safety violations. Calling the incident “deeply unfortunate,” he noted that it occurred during peak tourist season, when large numbers of visitors arrive in the coastal state.

The state government has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident. Authorities have also announced a statewide fire safety audit of all nightclubs to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The Calangute panchayat is expected to issue notices to all nightclubs on Monday, directing them to submit valid fire safety permits. Nightclubs lacking mandatory clearances may face license cancellation.

As the investigation continues, the tragedy has once again raised serious questions about fire safety enforcement and regulatory oversight in entertainment venues across Goa.
