Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren Passes Away at 81

New Delhi, August 4, 2025 — Veteran tribal leader and former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Shibu Soren, passed away on Sunday, following prolonged health complications. He was 81.

According to reports, Soren breathed his last at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, where he had been admitted since June 19 after a sharp deterioration in his health. He had been suffering from multiple age-related ailments over the past several months.

Soren, a towering figure in Jharkhand’s political landscape and a key leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), served as the state’s Chief Minister multiple times. He also held the portfolio of Union Minister for Coal in the past.

Confirming the news of his father’s demise, current Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed deep grief. In an emotional tweet, he wrote, “Guruji has left us all. Today, I feel like I have become zero.” The term “Guruji” is how Shibu Soren was respectfully addressed by followers and party workers.

Born on January 11, 1944, Shibu Soren was known for his relentless fight for tribal rights and the creation of a separate Jharkhand state. His political career spanned over five decades and was marked by grassroots activism, legislative leadership, and a strong tribal connect.

Tributes have started pouring in from across the political spectrum, with leaders mourning the loss of a stalwart who played a pivotal role in shaping Jharkhand’s identity and politics.

Funeral details are awaited, and a state mourning is likely to be announced by the Jharkhand government.
