Delhi’s AQI Hits 500 in May for First Time, Atishi Blames BJP’s 4-Engine Governance

Historic Pollution Spike in Delhi Raises Alarm

For the first time in history, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached the hazardous level of 500 in the month of May, a time when pollution levels are usually lower compared to winter months. The spike has triggered public concern and strong political reactions.

Atishi Slams BJP’s Multi-Tier Government in Capital

Former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Atishi Marlena criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the alarming air quality. In a sharply worded statement, she pointed out that despite BJP controlling four layers of governance in Delhi — Municipal Corporation, State LG, Central Government, and the New Delhi Municipal Council — pollution continues to rise unchecked.

“Now there are no excuses left. With a four-engine government in place, the BJP cannot escape responsibility,” Atishi stated.

Open Letter to CM Rekha Gupta

In her remarks, Atishi revealed that she has written a formal letter to Rekha Gupta, the newly appointed BJP Chief Minister of Delhi, highlighting the BJP’s administrative failure in tackling pollution. She urged the CM to take immediate action and offer a transparent roadmap to address the environmental crisis.

Delhiites Struggle to Breathe

As AQI levels hit the uppermost limit of the measurement scale, residents across Delhi have reported difficulty in breathing, eye irritation, and health discomfort. Environmental experts have described the situation as “hazardous,” warning of potential long-term health consequences if urgent steps are not taken.
