New Delhi, August 20, 2025:
The man who attacked Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a public hearing on Wednesday has been preliminarily identified. During questioning, Delhi Police said the accused revealed his name as Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, a 41-year-old resident of Rajkot, Gujarat.
The attack occurred during CM Gupta’s daily public hearing session, held from 7 a.m. at her Civil Lines office. According to eyewitnesses, the attacker arrived carrying a bag on his back and some papers in his hand. Pretending to submit a complaint, he approached the Chief Minister, handed over the papers, suddenly began shouting, and then lunged at her.
Security personnel quickly overpowered and detained the attacker. BJP Delhi unit president Virender Sachdeva confirmed that the Chief Minister sustained a minor head injury but is safe.
Police are probing the motive behind the attack and verifying whether the accused is indeed from Gujarat. Investigators are also trying to determine what grievance he may have had against the Delhi CM. CCTV footage from the site is under review.
Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra condemned the attack as an “unpardonable crime,” calling both the attacker and those behind him “cowards” and “criminals.” Meanwhile, BJP leaders suggested the possibility of a political conspiracy.
