Attempted Attack on Delhi CM Rekha Gupta During Public Hearing

New Delhi, August 20, 2025:
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta narrowly escaped harm on Wednesday after a man attempted to attack her during a public hearing at her official residence.

According to police, the accused first tried to hurl a stone-like object at the Chief Minister. When that failed, he attempted to slap her and even tried to pull her hair. Fortunately, CM Gupta did not suffer any serious injuries.

The man, believed to be around 35 years old, was immediately overpowered and taken into custody. Police have begun questioning him to determine his motive and to trace where he came from.

A preliminary probe revealed that the accused was holding a bundle of papers, shouted loudly during the hearing, and then tried to lunge toward the Chief Minister. Authorities are investigating whether he acted alone or had any political or personal grievance.

Political Reactions

The incident has sparked sharp reactions across Delhi’s political circles.

  • Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva called the attack “unfortunate,” saying:
“A woman Chief Minister who works 18 hours a day and regularly holds public hearings should not face such threats. The police must ensure her safety. The accused has been detained, and further details are awaited.”

  • BJP MLA Harish Khurana alleged that the attacker not only attempted to slap CM Gupta but also tried to pull her hair, leaving her injured. He raised concerns over lapses in her security and demanded stronger measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Security Concerns

The attempted assault has now triggered a wider debate about the adequacy of security provided to the Chief Minister, especially during open public interactions. Police officials said additional security measures may be considered to avoid similar incidents going forward.
