In a swift and targeted counter-terror action, the Indian Army killed three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday morning. Among the dead is one senior LeT commander. The operation began at dawn and security forces are still sweeping the area.

The Army launched the operation after receiving specific intelligence about the presence of militants in Shukroo Keller area of South Kashmir. Troops quickly surrounded the location and began a search. Militants responded by firing at the forces, triggering a heavy gunfight.

Local sources claimed that the encounter initially began in nearby Kulgam district before spreading to Shopian. Army personnel returned fire and eliminated three militants in the exchange. Officials are working to confirm their identities.

Link to April’s Pahalgam Attack Under Probe

Authorities have not confirmed whether the killed militants were involved in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26 civilians dead. However, security forces have increased anti-terror sweeps across South Kashmir and Kishtwar’s forests since that attack.

Today’s encounter is part of those efforts. Though the military has not established a direct connection yet, investigations are ongoing.

Search Operations Continue

Security forces are still combing the Shopian forests for any remaining threats. They believe more militants may be hiding in the area.

The Army’s quick response highlights its continued focus on rooting out terror cells in Jammu and Kashmir. Forces remain on alert to prevent further attacks and to dismantle networks like LeT that pose a danger to national security.
