; High Alert Issued Across Punjab and Several Border States
Chandigarh/New Delhi, May 9, 2025 – Amid escalating tensions with Pakistan, air raid sirens were heard early Friday morning in Chandigarh and Ambala, triggering a high alert in multiple regions of Punjab and other border states. Residents in both cities have been instructed to stay indoors and avoid venturing outside unless absolutely necessary.
Sirens reportedly originated from the Air Force Station in Chandigarh, and advisory messages were quickly circulated, urging citizens to remain inside and away from balconies. Similar alerts have been issued in Patiala, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, and Jalandhar. While Patiala district officials stated that the situation is under control, they still recommend residents stay home as a precaution.
Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav confirmed the alert, noting that intelligence reports suggest the possibility of a Pakistani air strike targeting key installations, including the Air Force Station. Mohali Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal also released a public advisory urging people in vulnerable sectors—particularly near Sectors 45 and 47—to remain inside. Security patrols by police and administration have been intensified in critical areas of both cities.
Additionally, schools in six border districts of Punjab—Fazilka, Pathankot, Ferozepur, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Tarn Taran—have been ordered to remain shut until further notice. Punjab shares a 532-kilometre border with Pakistan, making the region especially sensitive.
Meanwhile, cities like Ludhiana and Jalandhar experienced blackouts on Thursday night. Although the general public remains calm, many villagers near the zero line expressed trust in the Indian Army, stating they feel safe. Reports indicate that the Indian Air Force successfully intercepted Pakistani aerial attempts, neutralizing them before impact.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has cancelled all leaves of government employees, paramilitary forces, and BSF personnel. Home Minister Amit Shah has also held discussions with CRPF and BSF chiefs to assess the situation and ensure full preparedness. Public gatherings and large events across Punjab have been temporarily banned.
Elsewhere, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, and Gujarat have also been placed on high alert. Heavy shelling by Pakistani forces along the Line of Control has resulted in the deaths of more than a dozen Indian civilians, with over 40 injured. In response, India has activated its full air defense grid.
In Ludhiana, the District Commissioner held a press briefing urging residents to cooperate during blackouts and to avoid rumors. Media professionals have been advised to maintain a safe distance—at least 100 meters—from any suspicious object. Authorities reaffirmed that both security and administrative teams are on high alert and fully operational.
