Just a day after peace talks in Turkey, Russia has stepped up its military offensive against Ukraine. The talks ended without an agreement on a ceasefire, though both sides did agree to exchange 1,000 prisoners.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky were expected to attend the talks. However, Putin changed his plans at the last minute, and the meeting was held only between representatives of both nations.
In a shocking incident, a Russian drone hit a civilian bus in Ukraine’s Sumy region. The explosion killed at least nine passengers. Ukrainian police described the attack as a war crime, citing the deliberate targeting of innocent people.
Officials released images showing the top of the bus completely destroyed. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing.
Russian forces also targeted a Ukrainian military camp in the same region. Reports suggest that Ukrainian troops had stored weapons there. The exact damage from this strike is still unknown.
According to a report from TASS, Russia aims to pressure Ukraine into withdrawing its forces from disputed regions. Russia has made this a condition for agreeing to any ceasefire.
Reuters reports that both Russia and Ukraine continue to strike each other’s territories without hesitation. Despite international calls for peace, the war is intensifying. Hopes that former U.S. President Donald Trump might mediate have also faded, as no high-level talks took place beyond the delegations.
For now, both sides remain firm in their positions, and the civilian toll continues to rise.
