Following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, the Indian government has shifted into full action mode. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after meeting the Chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF), held a high-level meeting with the Defence Secretary to review the situation. These developments indicate that India is preparing for a decisive response.
On April 22, a horrifying terrorist attack in Pahalgam claimed the lives of 26 innocent civilians, shaking the entire nation. The attack has drawn widespread international condemnation, with countries such as the United States, Israel, and Russia standing in support of India. The attack also exposed the ongoing activities of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in the region.
On April 29, 2025, Prime Minister Modi chaired a high-level security meeting with the chiefs of all three armed forces, including the Air Force Chief. Also present were Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan. During the meeting, PM Modi gave the armed forces “complete freedom” to decide the time, place, and manner of retaliation.
Meanwhile, Pakistan appears increasingly nervous about India’s potential response and has been appealing to the international community for support. Reports suggest that Pakistan has reached out to countries like Russia, urging them to mediate and reduce tensions with India — requests that have reportedly not yielded favorable responses.
In the wake of the Pahalgam attack, India has already initiated a series of stern measures against Pakistan:
Suspension of Indus Waters Treaty talks: India has halted further discussions under the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty.
Visa restrictions: India has stopped issuing visas to Pakistani citizens.
Expulsion orders: All Pakistani nationals currently in India have been instructed to leave.
Port access denied: No ships bearing the Pakistani flag are being allowed to dock at Indian ports.
Trade ban: India has imposed a complete ban on imports from Pakistan.
The Modi government is also exploring economic actions at the international level. It is reportedly engaging with organizations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to curb financial assistance to Pakistan. The clear message from New Delhi is that countries supporting terrorism will face global isolation.
