The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has constituted a new Institute Body (IB), which will serve as the highest decision-making authority within the institution. This newly formed body comprises 15 members, including distinguished experts from the fields of science, medicine, and management, tasked with strengthening PGIMER’s administrative, operational, and financial frameworks.
Among the prominent members is Dr. K. Vijay Raghavan, former Principal Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister. Other notable members include Dr. Nikhil Tandon, Head of the Endocrinology Department at AIIMS Delhi; Dr. Vineet Ahuja from AIIMS Delhi’s Gastroenterology Department; and Professor B. S. Sahay, Director of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Jammu, who will contribute his expertise to enhance PGIMER’s governance.
Former AIIMS Delhi faculty member Prof. Sushil Kabra, previously Head of the Pediatrics Department, is also part of the IB. The body includes three ex-officio members: the Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, the Director General of Health Services, and the Director of PGIMER. Additionally, three senior officials from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare-the Health Secretary, Additional Secretary, and Financial Adviser-along with a representative from the Ministry of Education, are members.
The formation of this IB is expected to accelerate decision-making and improve the efficiency of PGIMER’s administration. In the coming two months, standing committees for finance and procurement will also be established to streamline financial management and purchasing processes.
This development aligns with PGIMER’s ongoing efforts to expand and enhance its medical education and healthcare services, including plans for a new MBBS course and infrastructure expansion at its Sarangpur campus.
