New Delhi, July 21, 2025 – In a surprising turn of events, India’s Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has submitted his resignation, which has been officially accepted by President Droupadi Murmu, the Rashtrapati Bhavan confirmed earlier today.

No Official Reason Announced Yet

As of now, no formal reason has been provided for the resignation. However, sources within the government suggest that personal and health-related reasons could be behind the unexpected decision. The Vice President tendered his resignation directly to the President this morning.

Jagdeep Dhankhar had taken office as the 14th Vice President of India in August 2022. A former Governor of West Bengal and senior advocate, he was known for his active role in the Rajya Sabha and a sharp public profile.

What Happens Next?

With the Vice President’s office now vacant, constitutional procedures for electing a new Vice President are expected to be initiated soon. Until then, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha may assume certain responsibilities, but the absence of a sitting Vice President—who also functions as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha—will be closely watched during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.
