Venezuela earthquake: 6.2 magnitude tremor strikes Mene Grande, no tsunami warning issued

Caracas, Sept 25 (2025) – Northern Venezuela was jolted by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake in the early hours of Thursday, sending residents rushing out of their homes and sparking widespread fear.

According to the National Seismology Center, the quake struck at 3:51 am local time, with its epicenter located about 24 kilometers northeast of Mene Grande. The quake originated at a relatively shallow depth of 7.8 kilometers, making the tremors strongly felt across the region.

Tremors felt in Colombia, no casualties reported yet

Initial reports suggest that the earthquake was also felt in parts of neighboring Colombia, where residents experienced light to moderate shaking. While the tremor triggered panic, there have been no immediate reports of major damage or casualties. Authorities are still assessing the impact in remote areas.

Mene Grande – a critical oil hub

Mene Grande, considered one of Venezuela’s most significant regions due to its vast proven oil reserves, lies within the quake-affected zone. Experts have noted that the area is geologically sensitive, but so far, no disruption to oil facilities has been reported.

US agencies: No tsunami threat

While U.S. monitoring agencies described the earthquake as “potentially dangerous,” they confirmed that there is no tsunami threat and no unusual changes detected in ocean currents.

The Venezuelan government has not yet issued an official statement, though emergency teams are believed to be on standby to respond to any aftershocks.
