US-Iran Peace Talks Indecisive: No Resolution After 21-Hour Marathon Meeting in Islamabad

Islamabad: April 12, 2026

The ongoing peace talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan, have concluded without reaching an agreement. Following a grueling 21-hour negotiation session, US Vice President JD Vance expressed disappointment, stating that he is returning to the United States without a resolution. The high-level meeting was convened to address escalating tensions in the Middle East, ongoing Israeli strikes in Lebanon, and the contentious issues surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Why Did the Talks Fail?

During a press conference, JD Vance clarified that the US had presented its “best offer” to Iran, but the Iranian delegation refused to accept it. The primary reasons for the deadlock include:

  • Control of the Strait of Hormuz: Iran seeks total control over this critical waterway, whereas the US maintains that it is an international passage that cannot be blocked or controlled by any single nation.

  • Nuclear Weapons Issue: The US sought assurances that Iran would not pursue nuclear weapons, but Iran flatly rejected the American conditions.

  • Economic Sanctions: Iran remained firm on its demand for the immediate release of frozen assets (including $6 billion) and the lifting of economic sanctions.

  • Military Conflict: Iran cited Israeli military actions in Lebanon as a major roadblock to any successful negotiation.

What Lies Ahead?

The meeting in Islamabad was attended by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Army Chief Asim Munir. With the failure of these talks, regional tensions are expected to escalate further.

JD Vance’s statement signals that the US is now prepared to adopt a tougher stance. He emphasized that the United States will take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of its vessels and keep shipping lanes open. For an Iran weakened by 40 days of conflict, this agreement was considered vital; the collapse of talks represents a significant diplomatic setback. The US has further indicated that it remains prepared for a “military option” if Iran does not cease its provocative activities.
