A shocking shooting incident rocked Brown University in the US state of Rhode Island on Sunday morning when a masked gunman opened fire inside a university building during an examination, killing at least two students and leaving several others critically injured.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the attacker entered the engineering building on campus while students were appearing for their final exams. The gunman, dressed in black and carrying a firearm, began firing indiscriminately, creating panic and chaos inside the building.
Authorities confirmed that two students died on the spot, while eight others were seriously injured and rushed to nearby hospitals. Doctors have described the condition of the injured as stable but critical in some cases.
Deputy Police Chief Timothy O’Hara said the suspect has not yet been arrested. A massive search operation has been launched across the university campus and surrounding areas. Police, along with federal agencies, including the FBI, are combing the area to track down the attacker.
The motive behind the attack is still unknown.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley urged students and staff to remain indoors and avoid traveling until further notice. “The campus is under lockdown. Students are advised to stay where they are and not attempt to leave until authorities declare the area safe,” the mayor said.
Several students described terrifying moments during the attack. One student working on a project in a nearby hostel said he froze after hearing gunshots. Another student said he was standing close to the building and hid under a desk when the firing began.
US President Donald Trump expressed grief over the incident, saying, “At this moment, all we can do is pray for the victims and their families.” He confirmed that he had been briefed on the shooting and that the FBI had reached the scene.
Vice President JD Vance called the incident “extremely dangerous” and said federal authorities were fully engaged in the investigation. “Every possible effort is being made to capture the suspect,” he said.
The shooting has once again sparked debate over gun violence in the United States. Such incidents have become increasingly frequent, with reports of mass shootings emerging almost daily across different parts of the country.
As investigations continue, the Brown University community remains in shock, mourning the loss of young lives that were cut short during what should have been a routine exam day.
