U.S. Warns Hamas: “Severe Consequences” if It Targets Its Own People in Gaza
Despite the ongoing ceasefire in Gaza, the United States has issued a strong warning to Hamas, accusing the militant group of preparing to attack its own people. U.S. intelligence agencies have reported that Hamas may be planning operations against Palestinian civilians in Gaza — a move Washington says would have serious consequences.
According to a statement from the U.S. State Department, credible intelligence reports suggest that Hamas intends to violate the ceasefire agreement brokered earlier this month by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States. The U.S. said it has already notified the countries that guaranteed the ceasefire about these troubling developments.
“If Hamas attacks or intimidates Palestinian civilians, it will face severe consequences,” the statement read. “We urge Hamas not to endanger the lives of its own people in any way.”
The U.S. has made it clear that any violation of the ceasefire by Hamas would trigger measures aimed at restoring peace and ensuring civilian safety. American officials emphasized that such actions by Hamas would not only risk countless lives but also undermine regional stability at a fragile time in the Middle East.
A senior adviser to President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Washington and Israel are working together to establish a “safe zone” for refugees — a protected area where Palestinians fleeing Hamas-controlled regions could seek shelter.
Citing The Times of Israel, recent reports allege that Hamas has executed several Palestinians accused of collaborating with Israel. These killings, carried out within Gaza, have heightened fears that Hamas could now turn its aggression inward amid growing political and military pressure.
The fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, mediated by Cairo, Doha, and Washington, remains under strain. Negotiations between Hamas and Israel are ongoing, but mistrust is deep on both sides. U.S. officials say any renewed violence—especially one targeting Palestinian civilians—would jeopardize not only Gaza’s security but also broader peace efforts in the region.
