U.S. Suspends Work Visas for Commercial Truck Drivers from India and Several Other Countries

Washington, August 22, 2025 – The United States has immediately suspended the issuance of work visas for commercial truck drivers. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the decision, calling it a major setback for countries around the world, including India.

Reason Behind the Ban
Secretary Rubio stated on his official X (formerly Twitter) account that the move was taken to prevent accidents caused by foreign truck drivers on American roads and to protect jobs for U.S. drivers. He specifically referred to a recent accident in Florida, in which an Indian truck driver, Harjinder Singh, was arrested. The crash, caused by Singh’s alleged negligence, resulted in the deaths of three people, prompting the administration to enforce the suspension immediately.

Further Measures Announced
U.S. officials also said they would crack down on foreigners who obtain driver’s licenses through illegal means. U.S. Secretary Kristi Noem added that her team will work with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to prevent undocumented immigrants from acquiring such licenses.

Review of 55 Million Visas
In addition, the Trump administration has announced a review of 55 million visa holders. The review aims to identify those who have violated visa rules, engaged in misconduct, or overstayed beyond their visa validity. Following the review, authorities will decide whether to deport, extend visas, or issue warnings to such individuals.
