Turkey Earthquake 6.1 Magnitude Hits Balıkesir, Multiple Aftershocks and Building Collapses Reported
Balıkesir, Turkey – August 11, 2025 :
A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 magnitude struck Turkey’s northwestern Balıkesir province late Sunday night, causing the collapse of nearly a dozen buildings and triggering multiple aftershocks. The epicenter was identified in the town of Sındırgı, with tremors felt as far as Istanbul, approximately 200 kilometers away, home to over 16 million residents.
Authorities reported that at least two people were trapped under rubble, while rescue teams managed to pull four survivors to safety. Sındırgı Mayor Serkan Sak confirmed significant structural damage in the town, including several building collapses. In nearby Gölcük village, multiple homes were destroyed and the minaret of a mosque toppled.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) confirmed several aftershocks following the main quake, including one measuring 4.6 magnitude. Officials urged residents to stay away from damaged structures due to the risk of further collapses.
This disaster comes as a stark reminder of Turkey’s seismic vulnerability. The country sits on multiple active fault lines and has a long history of devastating earthquakes. In 2023, a catastrophic 7.8 magnitude quake killed more than 53,000 people and caused massive destruction across the region.
Authorities have placed emergency teams on high alert and warned that aftershocks may continue for days. Residents in Balıkesir and surrounding areas are being advised to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines.
