Trump Xi Jinping meeting ends trade war tensions — China resumes U.S. farm imports

Seoul, October 30, 2025 — U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have struck a breakthrough understanding to ease trade tensions and restore cooperation across multiple sectors. Following their high-profile meeting in South Korea, Trump described the discussion as “unforgettable and truly remarkable,” saying it marked “a new era of mutual respect and partnership” between Washington and Beijing.

Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote, “My meeting with President Xi was wonderful. There’s great respect between our countries, and now it’s even stronger. We’ve agreed on several important issues — some of them truly significant — and we’re very close to resolving them.”

China to resume large-scale U.S. farm imports

Trump confirmed that Xi Jinping had personally ordered the resumption of large-scale purchases of American soybeans, sorghum, and other agricultural goods. “Our farmers are going to be very happy,” Trump declared. “As I said in my first term — it’s time for farmers to buy more land and bigger tractors.”

Speaking aboard Air Force One on his return to Washington, Trump said the Chinese purchases would begin immediately. “President Xi has approved this, and I welcome it. It’s a great move.”

Earlier this year, Beijing had suspended soybean imports after Trump’s administration imposed high tariffs on Chinese goods, leaving American warehouses overflowing with unsold stock. According to CNN, the White House had been considering a financial relief plan for U.S. farmers, but the government shutdown delayed its rollout. Now, with the new agreement in place, a fresh agricultural relief package is reportedly being prepared.

A one-year trade deal finalized

Trump also announced a one-year trade agreement between Washington and Beijing, under which tariffs on Chinese imports will drop from 57% to 47%. “The deal is finalized,” Trump said. “We’ll review it annually, but I believe it will last much longer than a year.”

He emphasized that the tariff reduction came after China agreed to take strict measures against fentanyl trafficking, a major concern for U.S. authorities.

Energy and minerals cooperation revived

Another key highlight of the meeting was China’s commitment to buy oil and natural gas from Alaska, marking a revival of U.S.-China energy cooperation. Trump confirmed that Beijing also agreed to ensure the “uninterrupted and free flow of rare earth minerals, magnets, and essential industrial materials” critical to U.S. electronics and defense industries.

According to a White House statement, long-standing disputes over rare earth supplies have now been resolved, paving the way for an upcoming meeting between the two nations’ energy ministers to finalize the energy trade pact.

A diplomatic and economic milestone

The Trump–Xi meeting is being hailed as a turning point in U.S.-China relations, temporarily cooling one of the world’s most significant trade confrontations. As Trump put it, “This is a victory for American farmers, workers, and industries — and a sign that dialogue works better than division.”
