Trump Slaps 25% Tariff and Penalty on India Over Trade and Russia Ties
Washington, D.C., July 30, 2025 (ANI) — U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that India will face a 25% tariff along with an additional penalty starting August 1, citing ongoing trade imbalances and India’s defense and energy ties with Russia.
In a post shared on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated, “While India is our friend, we’ve done relatively little business with them over the years due to their extremely high tariffs — some of the highest in the world — and their burdensome non-monetary trade barriers.”
The President further criticized India for maintaining strong defense and energy relations with Russia. “They continue to buy the majority of their military equipment from Russia and are also one of Russia’s biggest energy customers, alongside China — all while the world is urging Russia to stop the war in Ukraine,” Trump wrote.
As a result, he said, India will now be subjected to a 25% tariff and an additional penalty, effective August 1. “All things not good!” Trump emphasized. “Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAGA!”
This move is expected to strain trade ties between Washington and New Delhi, particularly at a time when both nations have been seeking closer strategic cooperation.
