New York, Sept 23, 2025 – U.S. President Donald Trump sparked controversy during his address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), openly questioning the organization’s relevance and urging countries to adopt America’s approach to global conflicts.
In a blunt speech, Trump raised doubts about the UN’s effectiveness in preventing wars and maintaining peace. “What is the role of the United Nations?” he asked, before answering himself: “The UN has tremendous potential, but it is nowhere close to operating at that level. I’ve always said this—it has incredible capacity, but it simply doesn’t work the way it should.”
Trump criticized the UN’s reliance on resolutions and strongly worded statements. “For most of my life, and at least for now, they seem to write tough letters but never follow through. Empty words don’t solve wars,” he declared.
Referring to conflicts from the India–Pakistan standoff to the ongoing Israel–Iran confrontation, Trump said it was “terrible” that the U.S. had to step in instead of the UN. “It’s horrifying that I’m doing this instead of the United Nations,” he remarked.
Trump urged countries to abandon what he called “failed methods” and adopt the American way of addressing crises. “A better future is within our reach, but we must leave behind broken strategies and face the greatest threats in history head-on,” he said.
In an unusual personal note, Trump recalled his earlier attempt as a real estate developer to be involved in the renovation of the UN complex in New York. “Many years ago, a successful New York real estate developer named Donald J. Trump made a bid to renovate this complex. But the project went in another direction, one that turned out to be far more expensive,” he said, expressing regret that his proposal was rejected.
