Trump Moves to Close Airspace Over Venezuela, Raising Questions About Possible Military Action
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the closure of airspace over and around Venezuela, a move widely seen as another step in increasing pressure on the government of Nicolás Maduro. The decision has fueled speculation about whether the United States may be preparing for a military intervention.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump called for a complete shutdown of the region’s airspace. He wrote, “To all airlines, pilots, drug dealers, and human traffickers: please consider the airspace over and around Venezuela completely closed.” Neither Venezuela’s communications ministry nor the U.S. Department of Defense immediately responded to the announcement.
This development comes amid ongoing U.S. operations in the Caribbean targeting alleged drug-smuggling vessels, as well as a growing American military presence in the region. Trump has also authorized covert CIA activities inside Venezuela. Earlier this week, he told U.S. service members that the country would soon launch a ground operation aimed at stopping suspected Venezuelan drug traffickers.
The series of actions has intensified debate over whether Washington is moving closer to direct confrontation with the Maduro government.
