Former U.S. President Donald Trump has once again asserted that his intervention played a decisive role in halting a recent escalation between India and Pakistan, claiming that his diplomatic efforts helped avert a potential nuclear conflict. Trump stated that the ceasefire was achieved largely due to backchannel negotiations conducted by him and his team, emphasizing that the United States could not afford to trade with nations on the brink of war or those deploying nuclear weapons.
In remarks made during a political rally, Trump said, “My team and I prevented a catastrophic war between India and Pakistan. We stopped it, and we did it diplomatically. It was going to be a disaster—maybe even nuclear.”
India has firmly rejected Trump’s claims, reiterating that the May 10 ceasefire was entirely the outcome of direct communication between Indian and Pakistani military officials. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar clarified that the decision had no involvement from any third party, including the United States.
“The ceasefire was a result of structured and strategic dialogue between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries,” said Jaishankar. “Following the Indian military’s pre-emptive strikes, Pakistan was informed within 30 minutes that only terrorist targets were being neutralized.”
On the night of May 7, India launched “Operation Sindoor,” conducting precise airstrikes against nine terror hideouts operated by Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed in Pakistan-administered Kashmir (PoK) and parts of Pakistan. Reports indicate that over 100 militants were eliminated in the strikes.
India was swift in communicating with Pakistan post-strikes, ensuring clarity that the attacks targeted only terror infrastructure. This transparency played a critical role in preventing further military escalation.
May 10: Initial direct communication between Indian and Pakistani DGMOs.
May 12, 12:00 PM: Follow-up discussion took place.
May 12, 3:30 PM: Pakistani DGMO contacted his Indian counterpart again.
May 12, 5:00 PM: Both sides agreed to halt all hostilities across land, air, and sea effective immediately.
India has categorically denied any external influence in the ceasefire, emphasizing the effectiveness of its own military preparedness and the professionalism of its armed forces. By rejecting Trump’s narrative, India has asserted its sovereign decision-making and credited its defense forces for maintaining regional stability.
