Tragic Incident in Morocco: Two Residential Buildings Collapse, 19 Dead Including Four Children
A devastating accident in Morocco claimed the lives of 19 people after two residential buildings collapsed like a house of cards. The tragedy occurred on Tuesday around 10 PM in the Masira-Zouagha district, leaving several residents trapped under the debris. Rescue operations continued throughout the night, during which many people were pulled out, but the death toll eventually rose to 19 — including four children.
Several Injured, Rescue Operations Continued Overnight
Multiple people were also injured in the collapse and are currently receiving medical treatment. Police, civil protection units, and rescue teams worked tirelessly overnight to clear the debris and search for survivors. Several videos and photos circulating online show teams removing rubble and searching for those trapped. The incident has sparked shock and anger across Morocco, especially as authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the collapse.
Why Did This Tragedy Happen?
Initial reports suggest that the buildings may have been poorly designed or constructed, though an official cause has not been confirmed. This is not the first such incident in Morocco. In recent years, the country has witnessed several building collapses. In October this year, lives were lost in a similar tragedy in the Old Medina of Casablanca. In another incident in May 2025 in Fez, nine people were killed.
The government has repeatedly promised to address unsafe structures. Last year, authorities identified more than 12,000 vulnerable buildings in and around Marrakesh, many of which became even more fragile after the powerful Al Haouz earthquake in September 2023.
Morocco continues to face mounting concerns over building safety, as citizens demand stronger regulations and immediate action to prevent such catastrophic incidents in the future.
