In the early hours of Sunday, a strong earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted Tibet, sending shockwaves across northern India, particularly parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The earthquake struck at 2:41 AM IST, disturbing the sleep of thousands as tremors were felt far beyond the epicenter.
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake’s epicenter was located in Tibet, close to the India-China border region. Despite the relatively moderate magnitude, the tremors were powerful enough to wake people from their sleep in both Tibet and neighboring Indian states.
Residents across border districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh and north Bihar reported feeling their beds shake, with many stepping outside in fear. Although the quake caused alarm, no casualties or property damage have been reported as of yet.
The sudden tremor sparked panic among residents who rushed out of their homes, fearing aftershocks. In some areas, people stayed outside for extended periods before returning indoors. Seismologists confirmed that the shockwaves were felt in border towns like Gorakhpur, Deoria, Siwan, and Motihari, though the intensity there was significantly lower than in the Tibetan region.
Many took to social media to share their experiences, describing the movement of furniture and brief power fluctuations, though no lasting disruptions occurred.
The NCS reassured the public that there has been no reported loss of life or structural damage. Local disaster response teams have been placed on alert as a precaution. Experts noted that while the quake was significant in magnitude, the depth and remote location of its epicenter helped minimize its destructive impact.
This earthquake comes just days after a separate tremor shook parts of Pakistan, highlighting ongoing seismic activity in the region. Experts continue to monitor tectonic movement along the Himalayan fault lines, one of the most seismically active zones on the planet.
