Third Earthquake in Myanmar Within 71 Hours: Strong Tremors Felt in Kolkata and Eastern India, Panic Ensues

Kolkata/Myanmar, February 4, 2026: A powerful earthquake struck Myanmar late Tuesday night, shaking neighboring countries including several parts of India. Measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale, the tremors were felt in West Bengal’s capital Kolkata, Bangladesh, and other eastern Indian regions. This is the third quake in Myanmar within the last 71 hours, creating an atmosphere of fear across the region.

Panic Grips Kolkata

Reports indicate tremors hit Kolkata around 9:05 PM, lasting 10-15 seconds as the ground shook. Panicked residents rushed out of homes and multi-story buildings into open fields. Fortunately, no reports of loss of life or property damage have emerged from Kolkata or any part of West Bengal so far.

Epicenter and Depth

According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the epicenter was about 95 km west of Yenangyaung in central Myanmar, at a shallow depth of approximately 10 km. Myanmar lies in a seismically active zone where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, leading to frequent earthquakes.

Recent History and Ongoing Risk

A series of quakes has rattled Myanmar in recent days. Notably, a devastating 7.7 magnitude quake in March 2025 caused widespread destruction in Myanmar, Thailand, and China. Geologists are closely monitoring the region amid the current activity.
