Panic gripped Sector 9—considered one of the safest and most elite areas of Punjab’s capital—on Wednesday following a daring daylight shooting. Motorcycle-borne assailants brutally murdered a property dealer from Mullanpur, identified as Charanjit alias Channi, by pumping eight bullets into him. The incident took place just as Channi was leaving a gym after a workout and was about to drive away in his Scorpio.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers were lying in wait. As soon as Channi took the driver’s seat, the bikers opened fire indiscriminately. Struck by eight bullets, Channi collapsed inside the vehicle, soaked in blood. His associates immediately rushed him to PGI (Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research) in the same Scorpio. However, due to massive blood loss on the way, he succumbed to his injuries before reaching the hospital.
Upon receiving the report, high-ranking teams of the Chandigarh Police arrived at Sector 9. Investigators recovered more than five spent shell casings from the crime scene. The area has been cordoned off, and authorities are scanning CCTV footage from nearby cameras to identify the assailants and the registration number of their motorcycle.
Sector 9 is a prominent VIP locality in Chandigarh, housing several government offices and prestigious institutions. This brazen daylight murder has raised serious questions regarding the city’s security arrangements. In the preliminary investigation, police are looking into the possibility of an old rivalry or a property dispute as the motive behind the killing.
