Tensions Rise in France After Palestinian Flags Raised, Israel and U.S. Express Displeasure
Paris: Tensions have escalated both inside France and internationally after President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement recognizing Palestine as a sovereign state. The decision has drawn strong opposition from Israel and the United States. Israel has condemned the move as one that “encourages terrorists,” while Washington has also expressed clear discomfort with the French stance.
Domestic Situation in France
Following the recognition, pro-Palestine celebrations erupted across France, where Palestinian flags were hoisted at 86 different locations, including cities such as Lyon, Nantes, and Rennes. In Paris, the Palestinian flag was even flown for half an hour at the City Hall during a public event, despite opposition from Mayor Anne Hidalgo.
France is home to the largest Jewish population in Europe, estimated at around half a million, with many holding key positions in society. The celebrations and flag displays have sparked anger within the Jewish community. The French government had officially banned such public demonstrations, but incidents still took place across the country.
Reason Behind the Move
France’s recognition comes in the wake of growing European calls for Palestinian statehood following the Israel-Hamas war, which began on October 7, 2023, with Hamas’s attack on Israel. While Macron’s decision aligns with that broader momentum, experts warn it could deepen domestic polarization in France. In addition, some groups have demanded legal action against those who displayed foreign flags in public spaces.
