 Gusty Winds up to 60 km/h and Lower Temperatures Due to Western Disturbance

Punjab, May 4 — A significant shift in weather has brought relief from intense heat across Punjab. Due to an active Western Disturbance (WD), storm and rain alerts have been issued for 16 districts of the state. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–60 km/h, thunderstorms, and rainfall over the next five to six days.

According to the IMD, Punjab’s average maximum temperature increased by 2.1°C in recent days. However, it still remains 3.1°C below seasonal normal, offering temporary respite from summer heat.

Orange and Yellow Alerts Issued

On May 4, an Orange Alert has been issued for Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, and Rupnagar, signaling the likelihood of severe weather. A Yellow Alert is in effect for Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Nawanshahr, Fatehgarh Sahib, Mohali, Patiala, Mansa, Fazilka, Muktsar, and Bathinda.

For May 5, the Orange Alert remains in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Mohali, and Rupnagar, while the Yellow Alert expands to Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Nawanshahr, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala, Sangrur, Barnala, Bathinda, and Mansa.

On May 6 and 7, a Yellow Alert has been announced for Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, SAS Nagar, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Patiala.

City-wise Weather Forecast

  • Amritsar: Partly cloudy skies with chances of rainfall. Temperature will range between 20°C and 36°C.

  • Jalandhar: Expect partly cloudy conditions and potential rain. Temperature expected between 20°C and 36°C.

  • Ludhiana: Cloudy skies with possibilities of lightning. Temperature range: 19.9°C to 34.7°C.

  • Patiala: Cloud cover and potential rainfall predicted. Temperature range: 21°C to 35°C.

  • Mohali: Thunderstorm activity likely with cloudy skies. Temperature will stay between 22°C and 35.1°C.

Temperature Report

The highest temperature was recorded in Bathinda at 39.3°C, while other cities experienced milder heat:

  • Amritsar: 33.5°C

  • Patiala: 35.5°C

  • Ludhiana: 34.6°C

  • Bathinda: 39.3°C

Conclusion

Residents across Punjab are advised to stay alert for sudden weather changes, especially in the districts under Orange and Yellow alerts. IMD recommends taking necessary precautions as strong winds, rain, and lightning are likely to disrupt normal life in several regions. The current weather conditions are expected to persist through the week.
