New Delhi, September 21, 2025 – The last solar eclipse of the year will occur today, coinciding with the new moon day of Pitru Paksha. This will be a partial solar eclipse, visible in select parts of the world but not in India.
The eclipse will begin on September 21 at 11:00 PM IST and will end on September 22 at 3:24 AM IST. Since it won’t be visible in India, the Sutak period—the time considered inauspicious before an eclipse—will not be observed in India.
The partial eclipse will primarily be visible in:
New Zealand
Antarctica
Surrounding regions of the South Pacific Ocean
At its peak, around 85% of the Sun will be obscured, especially visible from the southern seas near New Zealand.
Some of the major cities where people can witness the partial eclipse include:
Christchurch, Sydney, and Hobart in Australia
Auckland and Wellington in New Zealand
Kingston in Norfolk Island
The event will not be visible from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, UAE, Afghanistan, and most other Asian countries. It will also remain invisible across Africa, Europe, North America, and South America.
Traditionally, the Sutak period begins 12 hours before a solar eclipse. However, since this eclipse is not visible in India, Sutak rules do not apply here.
