In the early hours of Thursday morning, a small aircraft crashed into a residential neighborhood in Murphy Canyon, San Diego, causing widespread fires and prompting emergency evacuations. The aircraft, identified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a Cessna 550, came down around 3:47 am local time, severely damaging multiple homes and vehicles in the vicinity.
The FAA stated that the Cessna 550, a business jet typically designed to carry six to eight people, was involved in the crash. At this point, it remains unclear how many passengers were aboard or whether there were any fatalities or injuries.
Emergency response was swift. San Diego Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene within six minutes of receiving the distress call. Assistant Fire Chief Dan Eddy, speaking to BBC reporters, described a chaotic and dangerous scene, citing “jet fuel all over the place” and a “direct hit to multiple homes.”

Several blocks in the Murphy Canyon neighborhood were evacuated as a safety precaution while firefighters battled flames and searched the affected properties. “Our immediate priority is to locate any possible victims and ensure residents are safe,” Eddy emphasized.
Officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the FAA are expected to launch a full investigation. Residents displaced by the incident are being assisted by emergency services and local shelters.
The crash has sent shockwaves through the community, raising concerns over flight paths and safety measures in residential zones. Murphy Canyon, a typically quiet suburban area, now faces significant recovery efforts in the wake of this disaster.
